Gaiman has openly acknowledged Dunsany's influence. Both novels feature:
- a village bordering Faerie,
- a journey into an enchanted land,
- elegant, fairy-tale prose,
- bittersweet romance.
Many readers describe Stardust as a modern work written very much in Dunsany's tradition.
