Snyder was a big murder mystery fan and Agatha Cristie was one of the main influences for the mystery in her book together with other big authors of this genre.

Snyder first spark for this story was the chapter about how to create characters Whilst reading it she imagined a commander and his food taster

Sick Francis style of mystery was a big influence of the story of poison studies.

• First-Person POV: Snyder adopted her immersive, immediate first-person storytelling perspective directly from her love of Dick Francis's thrillers.
• Chapter Endings: She intentionally mirrors Francis's signature technique of placing mini-cliffhangers at the end of every chapter to keep pacing swift and addictive.

She has stated that her highly character-driven writing style was heavily influenced by the early fantasy works of Anne McCaffrey.
